My art teacher in high school felt that it would be more worthwhile to give us lessons on life according to him than to teach us the actual curriculum. These topics included learning the words to Karma Chameleon, why Boy George was phenemonal, how much he hated cats, and how (when he was straight and married) he used to make sure there were always a fresh bouquet of flowers on the mantle piece; how did she not know...

Among these was 'why Kylie Minogue is an icon':

• She is tongue in cheek
• She spans decades and is always relevant
• She doesn't take herself seriously
• She has deliberately made herself a caricature of 'the pop star'
